Brazilian journalist publishes first book in Portuguese about Mamma Mia! and the story of ABBA

Until 2010 the musical “Mamma Mia!” had already been staged in more than 10 different languages, but Portuguese remained outside this list. In November of 2010, “Mamma Mia!” opened in Brazil, in São Paulo, and finally got its much awaited Portuguese version. In Europe, many ABBA biographies fill the shelves of bookstores. Curiously there was never a single book about ABBA published in Portuguese until 2008, when Brazilian journalist Daniel Couri released the first one (“Made in Suécia – O paraíso pop do ABBA” /  Made in Sweden – The pop paradise of ABBA).

Despite all the group’s success, Daniel claims that “someone owed it to ABBA fans not only from Brazil but also from Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries”. In September 2011 Panda Books published his book, the biography “Mamma Mia!”, with the funny secondary title “How the illegitimate child of a World War 2 German soldier, a lousy salesman, a guy who wanted to be a lawyer and the Swedish girl who surpassed the Beatles became ABBA, one of the greatest pop bands ever”. The book tells the story of the musical “Mamma Mia!” and also the whole story of ABBA, including the group’s discography.

The 32-year-old journalist was motivated by his own difficulty in getting information about the group, in the early 90’s, when globalization was just beginning and the Internet was still a distant reality. “At that time, getting any ABBA material in Portuguese was almost impossible”, says Daniel. That’s when he started collecting everything concerning ABBA and decided to write in Portuguese the result of his researches, from what he read in books, magazines and websites in English. He even wrote to Carl Magnus Palm in order to check some information and make sure that his book would be a really accurate and reliable ABBA biography.
